100 Lessons

Bud and I reached a great milestone last week - we finished his first 100 reading lessons! We are both ecstatic and proud that we stuck to it. It took us a little less than six months, and I think that's great considering we had a big move, a new baby, and Christmas during those months.

His reward for working so hard was his very own library card. He was really excited about that, and even more excited when he found out he gets to use it over and over and over!
For his first three books, he chose an atlas, a book about Austria, and a book about coral reefs. It's neat to see him head for the juvenile non-fiction books now when he's looking for something to check out.

We used Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. Our lessons were supposed to put him at about a second grade reading level. He's pretty slow and doesn't try to read words he sees around very often, but he's got a good foundation for sounding words out. More importantly, I feel like I've learned some great techniques for teaching reading and I'm confident about the next steps we'll be taking to help his reading skills grow.
